I often see projects that are written in ancient dialects of Smalltalk. There are projects that use Visual Smalltalk Enterprise and some that use versions of VisualWorks or VisualAge Smalltalk from 10 years ago or more. There's a risk to using outdated software. Ancient versions aren't supported by the vendor so you are on your own to support everything. In addition, the computers you use to develop and run the software are being constantly upgraded. There are no guarantees that the old languages will run on the newer computers and newer operating systems. On top of that, the newer development environments include improved tools and support for modern features. Any project that runs on ancient software should put in place a plan to move forward to the latest versions. It does require an investment in time but the benefits are worth the cost.
